建筑源于城市

在德国斯图加特大学选学建筑，是我重要的一段经历。德国的建筑是现代建筑重要起源地之一。在德国进修完后，就会意识到：其实建筑本身的形式，很多时候是来自于这个城市对它的影响。个人只是城市的一部分，当设计建筑的时候，首先要理解城市，包括城市的记忆，地形气候。在理性理解的基础上，怎么去做感性的表达是一个问题。读完研究生之后，我终于得出了一个答案：建筑是从城市里来的，要解读这个城市，解读这些人群的需求，包括当地的文化习惯、风俗、生活习惯，个人喜好。建筑只是谈营造是不够的，因为建筑是为人做的设计，是一个要为人所用的空间。

Studying architecture in Germany was quite an important experience. Germany Is one of the important origins of modern architecture. After the whole process of learning, you'll realize that the outer appearance of a building is often formed by the impact of the city. Architects are merely a part of the city. Before you design a construction, you need to understand the city, including its memories and topographical climate. How to make a sensual expression based on rational understanding is a question. After graduate school I finally came to an answer that constructions are from the city. Interpret the city, people, and their needs, including the local culture, customs, habits, and people’s preferences. When you talk about architecture, I don’t think you only talk about building. Because architecture is a design made for people. It's a space used for people.

有这样一句格言：Construction is always with design. Design is always with construction.

/布里昂墓园/

这句格言教会我在整个思维过程中，建构始终需要和设计相互映照、相辅相成的，这句格言对我整个职业生涯影响也比较大。在设计过程中，要考虑落地性，也要考虑怎么去体现设计感。印象最深刻的是布里昂墓园设计，其实它是一个私人墓地，墓地里设计了一些机关，是对生与死，对今世来世的理解。当我走在里面就感觉很震撼，因为墓地设计成了一个提供给已故者的城市，在里面你会觉得你是在跟历史，过去的人进行跨时空对话。我觉得墓地不单是为故去的人设计，更多的是为存在的人去设计，如果你能提供一个好设计，好场所，无论是让人可以缅怀，还是让人心灵得到慰藉，其实都是非常重要的。如果以后有机会，我也想尝试设计宗教建筑，因为代表了对人的理解。
On our campus, there is a motto, ‘Construction is always with design. Design is always with construction.’ It teaches you that in your entire thought process and your construction needs to go with your design hand in hand like reflections in a mirror. This had a big impact on my entire career. During the process of designing, you must keep its viability in mind and consider how to embody a sense of design. What impressed me the most was there is a Bryon Cemetery design. It's designed as a private cemetery. He planned some special devices in the cemetery, showing his understanding of life and death of this world and the next. When I walk in there, I feel kind of shocked. Because he designed the cemetery as a city for the dead. Walking in there, it feels like a conversation with the history and people in the past. Across time and space, I don't think cemeteries are designed just for the dead. It's more for the people who exist. But if you can provide a better design and a better place whether it's for people to remember or to comfort the soul. It’s equally important. If we're talking about a future opportunity, I'd say maybe I can design religious buildings because it represents your understanding for the human.

在查普门泰勒的潜力拓展

在贝诺时，做了很多有影响力的项目，也得到了大家的认可，对我来说是一段比较难忘的经历，我对城市、城市综合体、商业，都有了更深刻的理解和认知。后来加入了查普曼泰勒，查普门泰勒本身是颇有建树的公司，我在想尝试一些新的可能，有一些突破。我自认为与查普门泰勒还是比较契合的，因为也让我看到了自己潜力的拓展，也能让我从更宏观的角度来看待所有的项目和城市的发展。查普门泰勒希望在将来提供给城市更加独特的解决方案，更加可持续性的、有创意的城市发展，这也是我一直所向往的目标。
When I was at Benoy，I did a lot of impactful projects. These projects are recognized by everyone. It is quite memorable during this experience. I got a deeper understanding and awareness towards the city, mixed-use and commercial projects. Later I came to Chapman Taylor. Chapman Taylor is quite an accomplished company. I was also thinking about trying something new. See if there is anything else to breakthrough. I'm a good match for Chapman Taylor.

Because it showed me the expansion of some of my potential. This enables me to see from a more macro perspective as I look at all these projects and the development of a city. We also hope in the future, we can provide some more unique solutions for the city and some more sustainable and creative development of the city. This is also the one thing I've always wanted.

查普门泰勒自1959年成立以来，成长为在英国排名前三的综合性设计公司。2007年进入大陆市场，涵盖规划、景观、建筑、室内、平面标识等一系列设计范畴。查普门泰勒与我比较契合的是，我们对建筑的理解与设计理念一致。2007年是中国建设的高峰期，查普门泰勒也看到了这个机会，并因为环球港这样一个大型综合开发项目的契机进入了中国市场，我们对于不同的建筑风格也有很强的驾驭力，也不单只是聚焦在商业项目上，其实我们也在努力地进入不同领域来拓展我们设计的语言，为每个城市创造出一些大家都非常喜爱的、特别的地标。

It's more in line with my design philosophy. In 2007, I believe it's a peak period of construction in China. So, Chapman Taylor also seized this opportunity because there is opportunity for a major mixed-use development which is the Global Harbor entered the Chinese market. We can also handle different architectural styles very well. We're not only merely focusing on commercial projects in this kind of business complex. We're also trying to get into these different areas to expand the language of our designs. To create different landmarks and buildings that people all love for each city.

热爱建筑设计可能不单单只是一个思维方式，某种程度上，已然成为我的生活方式。

我时常让自己对设计保持一种敏感度，对一些条件、变化的反应比较快。对于杂音，我会保持比较迟钝的感受力，不会让它过多地影响自己的判断和情绪。不管在工作还是生活中，还是要去做一些自己喜欢做的事情，才会做到最好。我特别欣赏CHIMI说过的一句话，所有的驱动都是来自于设计，设计是要为人服务的，这是我最终对这个城市的理解以及对建筑的理解。
Liking, loving (architecture) is more than just a way of thinking. In a way, it’s become a way of life. I often make myself. To keep a sensitivity for design. Being sensitive your response to some conditions and changes would be much faster. For some distractions I would make my senses dull down. I won’t let it distract me too much to affect my judgement and emotions. I think it's a balance that you must keep in work and life. I've been telling everyone that people need to do something that you like to do. That's what makes you best. I appreciate a quote from CHIMI, all driving forces are from one design. Therefore, the design serves for people. This is my final understanding of the city and of architecture.
